CPaaS

In one sentence

CPaaS (communications platform as a service) is a cloud service that provides communication building blocks, such as voice calls, SMS, WhatsApp, video and phone numbers, as APIs that developers embed in their own applications.

Also known as : CPaaS · communications platform as a service · CPaaS platform · CPaaS provider · CPaaS providers

What is CPaaS?

A taxi app that connects driver and passenger without revealing either number. A booking site that texts a reminder the day before. A field-service tool that calls the customer with one tap. Behind these features there is often a CPaaS, a communications platform as a service.

A CPaaS does not sell you a phone system. It sells building blocks: rent a number, place or receive a call, send an A2P SMS or a WhatsApp message, open an audio session in a web browser with WebRTC. Each block is reached through a telecom API.

Two neighbours are easy to confuse with it:

  • UCaaS: a complete application for employees (phone system, video, chat);
  • CCaaS: a complete application for a contact centre.

How it works

  1. A developer opens an account and gets API keys.
  2. They rent numbers in the countries they need, meeting local allocation rules (some countries require proof of a local address, for example).
  3. Their application calls the API: “call this number and bridge it to that one”, “send this text”.
  4. The CPaaS sends events back by webhook: call answered, call ended, message delivered, reply received.
  5. Billing follows usage: per minute, per message, per number per month.

The appeal is paying only for what you use and putting communication where the user already is, instead of sending them to a separate tool.

Example

A home-care agency in Cork schedules hundreds of carer visits a week. Its developers add CPaaS features to the rota software: a text tells each client which carer is coming, carers check in by calling a number that logs their arrival, and the office can call a carer from the app with the agency’s number displayed. Everything is recorded against the visit in the same system, without a separate phone tool.

The agency did not need a contact centre or a new phone system for this: its office staff keep their existing phones, and the CPaaS only handles the calls and texts that belong inside the rota software. When a visit is missed, the timestamps from those check-in calls are already in the record.

CPaaS at Universal Telecom

Universal Telecom offers developer APIs to drive calls, numbers and events from your own software, backed by global numbering we manage as a carrier. Integrators and platforms reselling traffic will find their offer on the wholesale page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CPaaS and UCaaS?

UCaaS is a ready-made application staff use every day: phone system, video meetings, chat. CPaaS gives you no application at all, only APIs to build communications into software you already have or are writing.

Is Twilio a CPaaS?

Yes, Twilio is one of the best-known CPaaS providers, alongside Vonage, Sinch and Plivo. Many carriers also offer CPaaS-style APIs on top of their own network and numbers.

Do I need developers to use CPaaS?

Usually, yes. You work with API calls, webhooks for incoming events and error handling. Some providers add low-code builders, but integrating CPaaS is still a technical project.

Related terms

  • Telecom API

A telecom API is a programming interface that lets software control communication services: place or receive calls, manage phone numbers, send SMS, pull call history or get notified in real time when something happens on a call.

  • UCaaS

UCaaS (unified communications as a service) brings business telephony, video meetings, instant messaging and often file sharing together in one cloud service, billed per user and used from desk phones, computers or mobiles.

  • CCaaS

CCaaS (contact centre as a service) is cloud-hosted contact centre software. It receives calls, emails and messages, routes them to agents, manages queues and gives supervisors live dashboards and reports, on a per-agent subscription.

  • A2P SMS

A2P (application-to-person) SMS is a text message sent automatically by software to a mobile user, such as a one-time passcode, delivery update, appointment reminder or marketing offer, through a messaging platform connected to mobile networks.

  • WebRTC

WebRTC is an open standard built into web browsers that lets people make voice and video calls from a web page with no plug-in or app to install, with encryption always switched on.

  • WhatsApp Business API

The WhatsApp Business API is Meta's business access to WhatsApp. It connects a company number to software such as a CRM, helpdesk or phone system, so several people can answer customers and messages sit alongside other channels.
